1996 Spi 1275 cooper, what do i need to fix this and where is located please?

Temperature gauge is fed from the MEMS ECU. Coolant temperature measurement is by the sensor located underneath the inlet manifold and the signal goes to the ECU.

The sensor is "interesting" to get access to. A lot of times corrosion forms around these sensors and cause issues. If you are going to really get into it, it would be best to unbolt the intake so you can get a good look inside to see if there is any corrosion and so you can flush it out really well. Then check to make sure the coolant temp sensor wiring looks good and trace to confirm no breaks. The sensor is cheap enough but access is a pain and there is always a chance its the wiring.
