Hi all,

I need to replace my starter motor on my mayfair 998 1984 (A plate). I've been trying to research which one I need but I'm getting a little confused. It looks to be a pre engaged but most sources say the pre engaged started in '85. Though I've only just bought the mini so the engine could be newer. I've attached photos.

Please can someone confirm its pre engaged or which type it is?

Also, is one of these the replacement I need:

http://www.minispare...rs/GXE4527.aspx

https://www.minispor...re-engaged.html

Or if there is a better one to get for a similar cost.

Many thanks
Ben

How many teeth are there on that starter?

also what is the engine number.

car age means little unless you know it’s full history.

That is a pre-engaged starter manufactured in the 50th week of 1988.
Looks like it is actually a Metro starter (from the orientation of the solenoid, the Mini one the solenoid is more on top), not that this stops it working or fitting into a Mini.

except that the metro starter had a different number of teeth to the Mini version.

I know the Metro inertia starter had a different number of teeth to the Mini inertia starter, but believe the pre-engaged starters to be the same.

Either way, the pre-engaged type ring gears fitted to either Mini or Metro were the same 129 tooth ones.  So a Metro pre-engaged starter will still work satisfactorily in a Mini with a pre-engaged ring-gear fitted to the flywheel.

There are 9 teeth and the engine number is 99HB81P.

Thanks

So it is pre engaged and going by what GraemeC said then both links to mini sport and mini spares above will work correctly? Would any one recommend a different one for a similar cost?

They’ll both work fine,

if you google the ADU8919 part number that’s on yours, you might find one £10 or so cheaper.
