I wasn't really looking for a discussion on the car (I think we can all see its an 80s reg swap job)
I was more looking for a discussion on the people placing these adverts.
Do we think this person was really trying to pull the wool over our eyes or if they really believed what they were saying because they don't know any better themselves
I'm always tempted to send these folks a "question" on ebay but I don't waste my time as I think they do know what they are saying 99.9% of the time, however this one was just sooo bad that I was really struggling to believe it was a logbook jockey and not someone who genuinely believed what they were saying.
I did message him, pointing out that I believe his car is a scam, strangely he didnt message back.

Ahhh you fell into his other trap (first being to scam folks) - wasting people's time, hence my never bothering to send a message either educational or otherwise
Suggests the advertiser probably wasn't as naive as the advert made it sound - I was just surprised how bad it was - normally these sorts of adverts are a little more ambiguous or less obvious but this was just so totally over the top wrong that I couldn't believe it was an attempt to fool people and that the advertiser genuinely believed what they had written.
Maybe I'm just trying to see the good in people because I am annoyed by the scammers as we all are (or should be)
I never heard about anyone getting caught by a logbook jockey because either
a) they are too embarrassed to say or
b) they don't know/realise they have been scammed so they don't know to tell anyone because they think its genuine (because they don't know)
Anyone on here ever been scammed or heard of anyone getting turned over by one of these adverts/advertisers ?

Scam, fraud, deception whatever you want to call it. Its advertised as a Cooper S which it isnt plainly dishonest.

Nothing '69 about that one aside the maybe aforementioned instruments and plate - I'd add washer bottle too! He knows his mini's alright as "all necessary components well coated in oil" , and hasn't pictured a panels , scuttle end or sills... whatever the shell was it looks in good order but I'd bet second had with a few iffy repairs and one heck of a lot of filler ...seller knows very well what he's got and imho has been very deliberately misleading
As pointed out it's sporting a 998 A+ and at one point had a brake servo fitted (whether "original " or not) ..My money is it being a c89 checkmate or similar with a logbook, a 90's cooper imitation paintjob and some aftermarket decals. ....
As a standard 998 late 80's red mini with all the fakery bashed off it looks a nice car - filler & well hidden rot permitting....

Yep, that's another one, just not as "flowery" a write up.
I especially like the Miniminor bootlid badge and the "1275" engine fitted that has been painted "998 yellow"!
Who are these adverts aimed at and who buys these bogus cars?

I think this is really something that mainly affects minis as most other classic cars weren't made for long enough for it to be worthwhile doing this. What really started it off was when the rolling tax exemption stopped and anything pre 1973 was suddenly worth more than post 1973. All of sudden people were putting early log books on late 70's/early 80's minis and it just rolled on from there.
It does seem to occassionaly happen on other classics but that tends to be the really valuable ones like Lotus Cortina's or high spec Escorts and Capris or where someone has imported a car from a dry climate and uses a UK logbook to avoid the hassle of registering it, paying import duty etc.
To the trained eye its easy to spot what is what but to the untrained eye it probably just looks like a nice mini.

I can imagine that being the case as like the mini they were in production for a very long time and to the untrained eye the early ones and late ones again are very similar. The beetle might also suffer with this and anything else that has been in production in a similar style for a very long time.

MGB's and MG Midgets were also affected due to being in production across the original tax exemption cut off date and because earlier chrome bumper models were more desirable and worth more, but once all year models are included in tax exemption it tends to die out. The Mini being in production until 2000 has a few years to go before all models are 40 years old though....
