Gday,
I've got some decisions to make regarding paintwork and it's not familiar territory for me, i'm more on the mechanical side of things. My mini (link in signature) was one that I bought already 'painted' and it looked ok and is pretty solid really. I don't think it was a bare metal respray as there is blue under some parts, but all in all its not bad, I just have to fix some small rust bubbles which I have scraped back and primed then buff it all.

So, I had to touch up some paint in the engine bay as the engine is ready to go in and I got some 2k paint matched to the bootlid. It's a good match colour-wise but its so much shinier off the gun than the paint on the car so I'm having a rethink, i might pull some things out of the engine bay and mask others up and freshen it all up. It's one of those hard situations where i've got someone else's half done project which is fine, but it's not to my standard. The splash of new paint makes the old paint look a bit shabby.

Here is the mini at the moment

Originally I was going to go white roof and bonnet stripes, but then changed my mind to black roof and black stripes. Similar to this, I think the different colour roof kind of makes the roofline look lower in a way.

Or, red all over, it is a very nice red and would look great all over too. Can't decide.

This is my 'quick' resto (3 years so far...) and in the future there's every chance I could completely strip the car and do a bare metal full resto in any colour I want, but for now i'm stuck with the red body if I ever want to drive this thing! So, any advice is appreciated to help me make up my mind which way to go.

Thanks
Hayden

I vote RED all over.
I don't know the mini history of the contrasting differently coloured roof. It looks ok on some of the early green minis with a white roof it look okayish but I'm not a fan. To my taste a black roof on a red car just doesn't go.

That's a controversial statement!!!  ;D

If ever a car suited a two tone colour scheme....

Tartan red and Old English white, the BMC works rally team colours are so 'right' although never actually a colour combination you could buy out of the factory, not until the RSP Cooper was launched and since then every other mini seems to be red and white, in my opinion no bad thing, I personally love it but for a different slant red with black roof also looks good. If I was building a car and wasnt too concerned about its history / originality I think Id choose Cumulus grey with an OEW roof, set of 10" minilights etc.

Controversial Moi!
I best keep my thoughts on grey to myself. Ha Ha!

Now I think the red with the black roof and the matching black arches looks great, but that’s just my opinion.

Yes, i'm stuck with red for this mini but i've got a '68 mini deluxe in bits which I may do Yukon grey, maybe black roof, don't know yet.

‘68 has to be island blue with OEW roof surely!

A 68 Mini deluxe, would you not want to keep its original colour?

I would definitely if I was just restoring it to standard. I have a '63 Mk1 which is totally original in Surf Blue and OEW I cant / wont bring myself to modify it but Ive had an idea in my head for a few years now to build a fast road mini from an 80s / 90s standard Mini, probably giving it the retro treatment, either MK1 or MK2 rear lights / grille, centre clocks, roll cage, 1275 on twin SUs grey and white colour scheme, 10" minilights.

It says indigo blue on the plate, looked at a few pictures online but it's not a colour I'm in love with. I want it to be nice, but not necessarily identical to how is came out of the factory, I'll make it mine.

As the owner of a red with black roof Mini I can only vote one way... I think it´s great.

WG5Modk.jpg

But then mine is Rosso74 and black, unlike the usual Tartan red. But then if mine wasn´t red I would love to build one in Almond Green with a OEW roof... Or Surf Blue and OEW.... There´s just too many great combos. Just don´t go snow white for the roof, OEW is much nicer.

As an owner on a Red and white mini. If mine wasn't an RSP then the roof would be going black. It's a toss up between flame Red with black roof or surf blue with black roof for my favourite colour combo.

Mine for reference

I have always preferred black roofs on a red Mini.
