I have just fitted a set of Timken tapers on the rear of my Mk1 S to replace the ball bearings that were there.  The problem is there is slight play after tightening them up. The tapered bearings seat on one another so there’s no point in tightening past the recommended torque. I ensured there was no grease between the two bearing mating surfaces.  Has anyone else had this issue?  I recall fitting Timken tapers in the 1970s and in those days, the two bearings did not mate on one another so you did the castle nut up enough so the bearings turned nicely and locked the nut there.

I had this problem with a set of Timkens from Minispares which turned out to be a shady set of bearings.  A replacement set sorted the problem.

Do you have a Timken part number for the correct set?

Hi,

You say Timken tapers - people often mistakenly assume Timken as the name became synonymous for Tapers on a mini; like people say Hoover when they really mean Vacuum Cleaner - are they genuine Timken or some other brand?

If genuine Timken, were the outer rings tight in the hub and is the hub shoulder in good condition/not worn? If they don't have the correct interference fit or the hub shoulder is worn then this may affect the clearance achieved (actually could be regardless of brand as even a good set of A.N.Other brand wont achieve correct adjustment if the hub is duff)

If you buy from Minispares genuine Timken will be GHK1805:

and A.N.Other brand will be GHK1548MS:

In the 70s a tapered rear bearing would have had a spacer like tapered fronts (I will have to find the set in my garage and post a picture) - the extended inners being an improvement/cost saving.......for Rover on the production line!!!  The spacered bearing would still have been tightened to a torque figure to clamp across the inner rings and spacer.

The Rear Timkens do have (from memory) 0.0012" End Float, which is very hard to feel.

Usually the cause for excessive play, I've found, is a worn hub.
