Hello

I've replaced the old cv joints with new from mini spares

I can get the new cv joint to align with the splines

Enough to turn the driveshaft so I know it's engaging

I've pushed, hit with a rubber mallet, hit with a hammer to the end of the cv joint with the old not screwed onto the end

It won't budge

It just drops off the end of the drive shaft as soon as I stop pushing or hammering and let go

Any ideas?

Have you checked if the circlip is still in the right place and intact in the end of the driveshaft?

Yes, it starts off in place but gets mawled, bent and moved out of place as I try to get the CV joint over and around it

Put the cv is a soft vice clean the driveshaft up of grease and put the shaft in that way, you will see more what’s going on

As above I'd also remove the circlip first to check it slides into the cv Joint.

As Cian says, put the CV joint in a workmate or similar in good light - the issue will be the circlips need to be compressed to fit in. I've just done one and I found the way to do it is to push the shaft into the joint up to the circlip, then use a small screwdriver to push the clip ends into their slot in the shaft, lean the shaft a little to lock them in the groove then push the rest of the clip into the groove whilst keeping pressure on the shaft so it doesn't spring out again. hope this makes sense and helps.

It also helps to use a dab of thick grease to hold the circlip centered and concentric with the groove, so it does not droop down with gravity during installation and gets pinched.

Thanks all

That outer circlip is a fiddly b*gger

It certainly doesn't want to stay in place

What does it do anyway?

Other than annoy me?!

Had similar issue with circlip not permitting cv to fully slide over. Took clip off and did a little bending to make it fit the shaft groove tighter. CV went right on just fine afterwards.
