I recently bought (and I'm now installing) a Hi Lo, spring, cone replacement kit and KYB shock absorbers

References from P&L Minis, Rotherham :
PL-SSK
552018 (and 19) KYB gas a just shocks

The KYB instructions were a series of diagrams covering their entire range
Couldn't fathom them at all

I have a problem
No matter how much I adjust the hilo's, the bottom of the front shock absorber won't align with the bolt from the top arm

It looks like the shock absorber is too long, if that makes sense

Having wound the hilo a very long way, the two were getting almost in line (the bolt from the top arm and the bottom of the shock absorber), but I was VERY CLOSE the end of the hilo thread and didn't want to risk unscrewing in completely

The car is currently on an axle stand

No wheel on, yet

Any suggestions?

You're slipping Nick - where's the library of failed coil spring pics?

Coils have not been mentioned yet. Rubbers are still springs.

have fun they are not fit for purpose unless your car is a trailer queen.

there is not enough movement available in the coil springs so the bind and then something will fail.

B*ll*cks to b*ggery

What's the failure rate?
All of them?

I've only fitted one so far

Not gone too far to switch to cones

Ok, so which cones are best for normal road driving?
Not lowered, never going off road with it

Quite keen on my vertebrae not being hammered into each other

Red spot?

Id just go with the standard ones. Red ones are quite hard and better suited to fast road or rally, I had them once and swapped them back out for standard ones. I’ve heard good things about the minispares evolution ones but not used them personally.

Standard rubbers with HiLos (genuine) will be best.

Failure rate of coils unknown but as they all have the possibility of going coil bound it is higher. The reason they go coil bound is there is not sufficient space between the coils for them to compress before the suspension has gone through its motion. this means the coils touch each other before the bump stop has taken some of the load. Used to happen a lot on early full suspension when people changed the springs not understanding what they were doing. An exploding coil spring next to your calf does hurt.

Good to know my decision to replace old rubber with fresh was a good one.
For the original question, is it not just a matter of compressing the shock to get it on the perch? There should be some preloading on the shock, even with wheel off ground.
