286 and 1.5's is an ace combo imo, once setup properly.

286 with standards is as far as I would go on a hot road car would not want more.

My rally 'S' has a 286 and 1.5 rockers. It is a greatengine, but to get the best I need to rev it to over 6000 rpm. For best acceleration I use a 3.9:1 final drive with a SC CR gear set to enable it to stay 'on the cam'. It does 'bog down' at low revs, especially if to much throttle is applied. Peak torque is around the 4400 mark and peak power is at 6400, so it has to be revved to make it go at its best. The 1'5 rockers did reduce the botton end torque, but added 3 bhp at over 5500 rpm.
I did once try a 3.44:1 FDR with the SC CR gears, but 1st gear was far too high and the clutch really took a hammering. Using standard gears would mean that although 1st was OK, the gap between the gears would prevent the full use of the cam unless you took it to about 6600 rpm before changing up to avoid being below the best power/torque range.
Over-camming is a problem and what is needed for best road performance is a good torque figure from around 3200 with peak power at around 5800. Look at the cam charts to select the one to suit your application. There are some really nice cams available now for all applications. I believe the Evo001 is excellent when combined with a really good cylinder head, induction and exhaust systems and a top-quality build.

Fitted my MED 1.3 Rockers this morning. They are superb quality, ready to go straight out the box. Set them to 0.015"- MED say 0.016".
Car drives better, idles better and its alot quieter...but i put that down to the old 1.5s being worn, they were 17yrs old !
Dicky.
Does it matter I am using supercharged engine? I am guessing no?

I had originally decided on the 1.3:1 version but mini sport said the higher ratio is what they recommend for the 1275 engine. The thread seems to prefer the lower ratio. Should I return them before I try them?

I was advised to fit 1.5:1 Mini Sport rockers as my existing pressed steel set are worn out; and that's what they sell most of.
I went ahead and bought the rockers plus Kent springs and shims for the pedestals. I have a standard camshaft.
Should I send them back before fitting and replace with a 1.3:1 rockers? I use the car for normal use.

I am re-building my 12G940 cylinder head. The head has had new unleaded seals fitted, new seats, valve guides and a 4 thou skim.

A pointless upgrade if the head is standard. And do you need the shims? Have you measured for the rockers?

So if it couldn't be original, I may as well fit roller rockers. Rang up mini sport to order a set of 1:3.1 rockers. They suggested a 1:5.1 set as that's what they sell for the 12G940 head. Here the story begins. The more I research the more I'm not convinced. I haven't fitted anything yet, so I can return the rockers, Kent springs, shims. Re-order the 1:3.3 and use the new dual springs I already have. A bit long winded, but need steer.

A big endorsement from me for the 1.3 rockers supplied by ACDodd. I have just fitted a set to my 1293 with re-con'd 12g940 to replace the original pressed set.
At 15 thou clearance there is now no excess tappet noise like before when running on old valves and worn rocker feet so gaps were a doddle to set.
The re worked arms from AC were really nice, with new offset bushes and perfectly flattened off valve contact points with signs of heat treatment showing. Came with a new heavy shaft too.
@ Pluckingpheasant...maybe worth thinking about?
