Hi All,

1992 SPI Cooper

Got a strange issue with headlights not working.

Problem;

Sidelights work, main beam works on flash function on stalk. Dipped headlights do not work.

Sidelights 'dim' when putting switch to position 3 for dipped headlights. Stalk forward to main beam in position 3 of headlight switch doesn't turn main beam on as it should.

Replaced dim dip relay, checked all fuses, connections, bulbs.

Whole new wiring loom last year.

Must be headlight switch on dash or resistor?????

Any help / experience welcomed.

Thanks

Check the stalk, also check behind the speedo binnacle for inline fuses, 2x blue/red for the dipped beam 2x blie/white for main beam

The headlight stalk is fed from the dash switch...Brown wire is 12v to the switch, blue wire is highs/lows in the stalk, while the purple wire feeds the pull-back-flash.

Sounds like something is up with the dash switch. If you disconnect everything, you should be able to turn the headlights on by connecting the brown wire to the blue wire.

Prolly a good time to grab some wiring diagrams...

thanks for the feedback

changed the switch today (rocker in dash) also cleaned up the earth on the resistor and replaced the resistor itself.

Still no change!

So far I have

- checked connections behind grille

- checked and cleaned earth under ECU

- Replaced light swith

- replaced dim - dip relay

- replaced resistor

- checked bulbs

- checked main fuse board and all inline fuses (none behind dash, just in engine bay in bulkhead)

- loom is 1 year old

Also, with switch in position 3, rear fog light still works.

Sidelights dim when dipped headlights are selected on switch

Main beam works on flash only

just no headlights!

can't get my head around it think I need to speak to an auto electrician?

Check behind the speedo binnacle for 4 inline fuses, and also look at the inline fuses behind the throttle body, check the red/white wire and fuse.

If all the fuses check out ok with no burnt holders then try another indicator stalk
