Hopefully my video uploaded but I have a squeak when rotating the driver side wheel seems to be coming from the pot joint on the engine?

Hi, did you ever manage to sort this as I’m seeing the same problem at the moment!

Mine is coming from the inner CV on the gearbox end so tightening the drive flange isn’t likely
to resolve.

Haha!

It’s like this (excuse wind noise and engine)

https://youtu.be/arr2868W4fI

Only materialises when hot oddly, but definitely coming from the inner CV.
I think it may just be the boot, doesn’t sound like metal grinding!

That’s what I thought at first, but jacked it up yesterday and spun the wheel and it’s the CV on the gearbox end squeaking!

Is the boot intact, has the grease managed to escape?

Boot all looks good - Spun the wheel earlier whilst inspecting it and can’t see any signs of grease leaking out!
Definitely no clunking nor sounds like ball bearings were falling apart inside either!

Update:

Today after a drive the squeak got really loud and could hear it from inside the cabin so got home and jacked up the car and got someone to turn the wheel whilst spraying WD40 silicon spray around the inner pot joints/boots. Suddenly the noise went away! It seemed to be spraying the pot joint end facing the diff case that made it go away (not the end the shaft comes out of if that makes sense?) — I understand spraying is usually a temp fix.. do you think I’ll eventually need new pot joints, or they may have just got a bit squeaky?

Even though the boot may not be damaged, water / moisture still gets in. This is one of the pot joints off my 74 clubby. It was as old as the car, boot was intact, supple and no damage.

Eek, is that how you found it, as dry as that??

It’s odd how spraying where I did solved the squeak (was the same on both sides of the diff) as there are no ‘free rotating parts’ just a splined rod going into a ‘receiver’

Did you remove the inner boot clip off that Sonik?

Nope, when i originally removed the drive shafts for the resto i left the gaiter and ball bearing race attached to the shaft but bagged up. The cup was removed.

To the OP, i know in some circumstances if the grease has been missing / damaged gaiter then the bearings will run dry. The pictures below show a really knackered pot joint, one that was on my sons car. As we never drove the car on the rd before it was bought we don't know how much noise this would have made??

The fact you have sprayed WD40 at the entry point to the diff housing makes me think its wont be this but however it might be worth a check.

Just to let everyone know in case anyone has the same issue, I got some 3-in-1 Oil with PTFE spray, gave it a good spray up there and so far, touch wood, the noise hasn't come back :)
