I'm going to be fitting my maniflow stage 1 kit to my 998 with hs4 carb.
The stage 1 kit didn't come with a needle. What needle do you think i should use AAU?

Thanks for any help

Use AAU, to get you to a rolling road

AAU is best. AAA will be far too rich. That's what I used anyway.

That's the needle that comes with the Minispares Stage 1 kits... It gets me close enough that I don't bother with rolling roads

I thought AAU, but I read on the minispares website it is suitable for their stage 1 kit and RC40 but may not give as good results with other manufacturers kits and exhausts, so i wasn't sure.
I'll be taking it to a rolling road anyway.

I fitted the supplied AAU when I installed the Minispares kit. I also removed the air filter inlet valve thing and drilled a few 20mm holes in the underside of the air box.

Took it for a rolling road tune and ended up with AAM needle. The car runs great with a lot of mid range torque (for a standard 998 :D ). It easily cruises at 70mph plus.

Every MOT I pop the AAU needle back in and it flies through the emissions tests.

Hope you didn't make the holes on the inside if the element ring? The correct place for the holes is around the wall sides of the box.

Otherwise the air flow isn't actually going through the filter.

I'm guessing it was done as per Calver.

Just my two cents worth, I have a 998 with a 12g202 head which has been ported to stage 2/3 level with big valves, double valve springs and a Kent 276 cam and a single Hs4 and found the AAU to be running to lean. I then tried a AAB which seemed a bit rich and finally settled on a AAM which is so sweet now.

I also bought a brand new HS4 to trial all these needles which came with a ABP needle which was very lean which is suppose to be suited to standard 1100 motors.

Go with the AAM needle I reckon. It will still be good if you do a few minor upgrades.

To be fair, the standard head is very restrictive, so the added air made the mixture too lean. :) I loved my modified 998 engine. so smooth and loved to rev
