wondering if its a re-worked gear knob? googling "fist gear knob" (careful!) throws up some images of items that could look similar with a little work.

this is the handle from an old cast iron stove/fire

you,ll also find these on old safes too, but usually made of brass, easy job tho to use as a boot handle as they are ussually square fitting.
