You will need to decide if you're going to buy a kit which includes a suitable base map or you're going to buy a bare ECU and make up your own system.
Kits from people like Specialist Components are built to a price and the ECUs themselves tend to be at the cheaper end. They do the job, nothing wrong with them per se, but features may be limited and the software itself possible harder to use if you don't know what you're doing. Consider after sales support and warranty; I see you're in NZ.
Go with a bare ECU and you potentially get a better made product with more advanced features and better warranty. The big downside with this route is that they do not include a Mini specific base map so you'll need more time on the dyno to get things just right. MCM retrofitted a Haltech to their JDM SPI Mini in which they kept the factory wiring and repined the ECU connector. So we know it's possible.
Lastly, you need to decide how much you want to do yourself. Do you want to hand it over to pro and drive away a turn key car or are you looking to do it all yourself. Often it will come down to getting the ECU your tuner knows how to use.
