there will be a range but there are so many variables. how far the flywheel assy in in the crank and how work the friction plate is. and then there is the pre verto flywheel with a pre-engage ring gear on it that will be again different but just not affected by the friction plate wear.

so to answer you question with another. what problem are you having?

Not quite aligning with your sketch above, all you need is about 0.060" to 0.080" from the tip of the Starter Motor Tooth to the Ring Gear when the Pinion is retracted. Check then it has enough throw in the Pinion to get a minimum 80% tooth engagement in the Ring Gear.

I use a MED engineering X lite flywheel  in a race car.  The measurement from flat face of housing to edge of ring gear is 29mm, with the autoelectrician adjusting the pinion to 27 mm to suit  . ( which is what Moke Spider said)  Now, whether this is the same as a standard pre engaged flywheel, i am not 100 percent sure.  As alluded to -Measuring is the best way - , flywheel taper "creep" over many lapping sessions can make a difference

My problem is, the starter does not always get contact to the ring. I have a brand new minispares verto flywheel and a new pre engaged starter.

The new starter does not crank. The old starter does only every second time crank or make a horrible kkkrrrrr sound...

I dont know if the problem is because of the flywheel or starter.

Sorry for my bad (swiss) english.

Ok let’s break this down.

the stater is always working?

it does not always engage with the flywheel resulting in a nasty metal on metal noise.

first thing I would do is remove the starter and inspect the teeth on it and then inspect the teeth on the ring gear on the flywheel.

the flywheel teeth should have a slight chamfer on them to allow the starter to engage easier.

Yes, starter always working.

Nasty sound happens only half of the time. Sometimes it starts perfect. Sometimes nasty grinding noise.

I removed the starter, the ring looks shiny new and nice. The starter is 20years old and has some wear but looks ok.

The distance (X) is 3.4cm

The maximum travel distance of the Starter pinion is 4.2cm.

So i have 0.8cm (0.32inch) of contact with the pinion and ring...
