Hi all,

First time posting here. I'm currently restoring a 1275GT with a Weber 40DCOE and I cannot get it started for love nor money. The pre A+ 1275cc (bored out to 1340cc) Engine was rebuilt years ago (so assumed good compression) and hasn't been ran since so all internals are brand new. Brand new battery (kept fully charged), new spark plugs, new electric fuel pump. After a few pumps of the throttle pedal to introduce some fuel in to the cylinder, it turns over fast and sounds like it's trying to start, but it never manages to start. After removing the spark plugs after cranking they smell like fuel. Even squirting easy start in to the intake while cranking has no effect. So far I have tried:

- Checking each spark plug for spark

- Checking battery voltage

- Checking that engine is grounded properly

- Checking adjustment on idle mixture screw.

- Checked and adjusted valve clearance

Can anyone recommend anything else to try before I hand it over to a garage?

TIA

Tom

Check timing to ensure it is sparking at the correct time and leads in correct order>lots of guides on how to do this.(not trying to teach you to suck eggs if you know this)I remember;spark at correct time, fuel and compression are all required.Good luck,Steve..

Thanks Steve - I'll double check the ignition timing when I get a chance. Hopefully it's an easy fix! I did previously set ignition timing, so unless something has changed then I'm still unsure...

It's never been run in its current state but I'm pretty certain it's been assembled correctly...

If the engine has been stood up for a long time it may be that the bores are "dry" which will result in a low compression. Firstly check the compressions as the engine is, then add some oil to the bores, through the spark plug ports,  and recheck the compressions to see if there has been any change/ increase. You have to start with the basics and ensure they are all in spec ensuring that the ignition timing, valve clearances, cylinder compressions, plug leads, fuel etc are all correct. You have to approach the problem in a logical manner to  find which parameter is missing, rectifying, them move on to check the rest.

With a few pumps in this weather you might just be flooding it. Just use the choke mechanism .
