I bought a Minispares Vernier can timing set

Lined everything up, then got the shims for the crankshaft.

Then found the engine wouldn’t turn over as the back of the vernier wheel is hitting the triangle bolt heads.

Can I lose the washers and run with just locktite?

Should I run without washers to give more clearance or find slimmer washers?

I rang minispares but not really got a clue and it won’t be them who have to take the engine apart to get at it if it comes undone, so over to you for advice please!

Thanks

Managed to fit some thin shake proof washers.

Got 5 thou clearance between head of bolt and back of vernier cog.

Is that enough?

Bought rounded button Allen key bolts now which should give me more clearance.

Never noticed what sort of clearance I have between the cam sprocket and thrust plate bolt heads but I don't have any clearance issues with an old kent cams vernier sprockets.
My engines currently dismantled, the thrust plate bolt head and shake proof washer combined thickness is 4.98mm.
Your shake proof washers possibly look slightly thicker than mine.

I’ll see what the new bolts come out at.

Do you think I’ve got the triangle the wrong way round i.e. can you identify which side is the bearing surface (shiny or dull)?

The plate looks correctly oriented to me, the bright silver side is the bearing face.
Just noticed mine has the part number in the bare steel non bearing side.

Ive got the bright side facing the cam so could be the wrong way round. I’m confused.com

The way you've got yours fitted looks correct to me. What I'm calling the 'bright' side is the white metal bearing side facing the cam in your photo.

The holes are not on an equilateral triangle, they are spaced different distances apart so it should be "impossible" to fit the wrong way. But I did dismantle an engine a few years ago where someone had enlarged one of the holes to be able to fit it the wrong way around....

The dull side of the Thrust Plate has the babbitt material on it, that faces the Cam, shiny side to the Sprocket.

I'd fit the bolts with locktite, they won't back out.

Ditch the washers completely?

Are A2 stainless bolts strong enough to replace the standard ones as the button head Allen key ones are perfect for the job and I get to keep all the washers?

I'm having the exact same problem fitting one of these cam sprockets. Did you manage to resolve this issue?
