Hi, I know they are new but just wondering if anyone has any experience of using the Minispares Evolution cones? I need to replace my standard items which are very worn and was going to put red dots on. But, these sound better and are slightly cheaper.

I have adjustable ride height, bottom arms and tie bars on 10" wheels. It is a road car but it gets a bit of abuse in 12-car rallies and Autosolos.

I have been running them for a few months! now done about 500 miles,

they are still settling, was at Minispares about a month ago met the guy

responsible for making them.

I do believe they are made by the same people as the Red Spots.

They are very well made and the car handles well on them that said

me and the car are not the fastest things around! been there done that.

There was a thread on cones a few  weeks ago I posted some photos

on there! search back you will probably find it from memory ( Something like

how high will my Mini get)

just to add a little more info from speaking to Rich and the guy that developed

them it took some time to get the rubber mix correct.

I did get them to replace a NEW set of cones that I bought and fitted! they sagged to

to about will wheel clearance after 7 miles and 3 months sitting in garage.

Sorry I can't answer your question here, but just jumping on your band-wagon here, I'm keen to try them.

I am guessing these are made to the same or similar formula to the Inocenti ones which were said to be firmer and sag less.

As a random aside, down the pub t'other day I was talking to a chap who used to be the foreman on the suspension line in Coventry making the cones  :shades:

Ask him why he made them so difficult to remove from the trumpets next time you see him!

Thanks for that, was a helpful thread. Interested to hear from minispares how the evo/red spot differ. The Evo's sound too good to be true!

I am wondering how firm the ride of these Evos are when compared to the standard rubber cone.

As we all know with standard cones - the bigger the bump, the bigger the thump....and there's a point where the THUMP goes up exponentially in relation to the size of the bump, rather than at a more standard curve rate like a coil spring.

The Red Dot ones claim to have a better 'curve' to their compression rate - thus they don't thump as hard when presented with a moderate pot hole.  The word 'consistency' is banded about a lot on the MiniSpares site in reference to this effect, I believe.

The Evo is touted as a better option in this regard.  I was wondering how it translated to typical round town and open road driving - nothing too spirited and no track or boy racing, just general round town and open road.

I guess to sum up, my main queries are:

- Do they just feel like a typical rubber cone?

- Do they feel harder or softer?

- Does the Mini handle any better?

Don't use coil springs on a mini, very bad things happen when things go wrong, whether that be snapping the tower off the subframe or bending other components.

Not 100% sure if this was aimed at me, since i used the term 'coil springs', but we're talking about EVO rubber cones here. However when i did mention coil springs i wasn't talking about the usual conversion kits that you see people fitting, i was on about these - which i wont be fitting:

I had a vague memory of them from years ago, and whilst browsing minispares came across the EVO cones, which interest me lot more!  I'm very much an advocate of upgrading and improving within the design of the OE equipment.

anyway, sorry for going off topic slightly guys.

I for one am just feeling lucky that there is still development and interest in our cars. This certainly could be the way forward (here's hoping!)

So......  Early days, I know, but have we only got one person following this topic so far, who has actually driven on these new Evo cones........and a heap of us others wondering whether to fit them or not?

Hmmmmm......maybe I should just give them a blast and report back.  However, I have not driven a Mini on new rubber cones (of the Original Tooling Style) before anyway, so I cannot make the comparison.  If I am brutally honest, ANY new cone is going to be an improvement on a Mini that is on standard suspension but is only 130mm off the ground instead of 156mm.

If they settle better, don't sag as quick and give a more consistent / less jolting ride, then I'm all for them.  My hesitation is that I am in New Zealand, so half a world away if I have issues with them.

As the said only person! I would say (Get them Bought) I don't think you will be disappointed.

I was speaking to Rich @ Minispares North today! ordering and picking up some spares!!

he said he now recommends customers to try them.

I personally find them very good, the doubters can say what they like, I am aware that my particular

car isn't a sporty (fast road/track day model) I use them with KYB Gas Adjust dampers.

I have driven new Minis back in the day, on cones and Hydrolastic, also track cars on Coil overs,

being an old codger I started working on Minis in early 1963 first owned one in 1965ish have owned

and built a fair amount over the years.
