Does any retailer sell a performance catalytic converter for a post 1990 Classic Mini?

You can get Cats on Minispares.com.

There's no such thing as a performance cat, they all have power loss

Not true Cal as you can get a catalyst with a more open structure (fewer larger holes) in the ceramic honeycomb which creates a better flow (lower back pressure). If it has been properly made with a full coating this helps.

Minispares do a sports version with exactly these characteristics

Oops, I apologise for the false information, thanks for the correction!

I have to think though, are they really worth the £216 asking price over a standard type Cat? Seems to be double or triple the price of a normal spec cat?

Standard replacement cat is £59.40 Inc vat part number RV8009

I've just replaced the missing cat on my 1996 spi and I'm sure it's made it actually faster!

Just anecdotal, no figures to compare, and it could be just that the system is better fitted now thus flows better.

No huge difference with or without the cat, put it that way.

1996 SPi. LCB to cat, minisport superflow twin box.

Yeah I’m not sure about the cost benefit.... standard cat costs about 1-2 Bhp apparently so standard is what I’ve always gone for with standard downpipe and rc40 system post cat

It would be great if the sellers had dyno proof of both cats back to back on the same car, so the only variable is the cat... Alas no evidence exists. I know what I'd rather buy.

My 1990 Cooper came with a Cat when new, but I've never had one fitted to it.

I have found myself recently wondering whether to get one fitted from a "green" point of view, and also that it might make the car less "stinky" - people don't like stinky cars now!

Most people appear to only put the cat in for the nice MOT man to pass the yearly assassination that is an MOT.

The link pipes available help the car breath and expel the emissions.

If it's a carb model it may be stinky in a different way with a cat fitted.  Do you remember when cats got fitted to everything in the early nineties which made the exhaust fumes smell like rotten eggs?  I'd rather smell unburnt hydrocarbons any day!
