As the title says, I've had a little bit of a knocking sound coming from the front LHS of the car occasionally when going over bumps. There's a bit of play in the LHS of the steering rack. Is this normal or worn?

Cheers.

That's worn needs rebushed. I'd refurbish it personally

I would check the rest of it over for play and if you find more wear on the other side I would just replace it with a new one.

There's no play on the other side, as far as I can tell.

New racks dont seem that expensive...

I agree, by the time you have bought new rubber boots etc, best you just replace the lot

They aren't difficult to overhaul and often all that's needed is the Bush and Gaiters. Some of the new racks aren't too brilliant and seldom last.

There's a how to guide on overhauling the Rack here;-

Thanks!

I think I'll try get the rack out (this looks like by far the hardest part!) and assess. Thanks for the help.

Didn't get much time in the garage today, but did have a better look at getting the rack out and pre soaking all the bolts in penetrant.

I did have a better look at the other side of the rack. With it at full lock (fully extended) there is play on the RHS as well... not as much as the LHS but still some.

To be honest, I'd rather just buy a new, clean steering rack and fit it rather than rebuild mine, but if the quality of the replacements for sale at MS arent as good, I will rebuild. Any thoughts?

Cheers.

Well, got the new rack in and the difference is night and day. No more knocking sounds and the steering feels so much tighter. Actually didnt take as long as I thought to install - two afternoons from start to finish.

Pic from a quick test drive afterwards.

Thanks! I've got a set of split rims for it which I haven't got round to painting because I like the steelies!
