Why are you fuming? It is a known thing that when buying from abroad you will incur vat, import and handling costs.

Anything you import over, I think it's £30, is liable for vat @20%. I hope it won't apply to the Eu when we finally cut the cord! What irritates me is the obligatory handling charge that's on top of the vat.

And they're not extra charges from the vendor - so why should they put it on their website?

How many UK websites do you see notifying of what charges any other country might impose if their goods are sent abroad?

Yep not the sellers fault or responsibility.

Better get used to it when Brexit completes too.

I've bought quite a few things from overseas especially Australia and never paid customs charges, secondly on Ebay anything overseas normally they say there will be additional charges

It can be a lottery when and the amount you get charged when buying from abroad, and the way Ebay works is quite unique, and not a requirement for others.

The type of product you buy, its value, its delacred value, product type, declared product type, country of purchase, method of shipping, courier used (Fedex, DHL, etc) all play a role as well.

If you have not been charged in the past you have been lucky, or one of the above has been a factor.

When I had a shop/website I used to send goods by post to most continents. I always had to fill out a Customs Declaration, the type of contents and value. It depends on what is written on the form as to whether you get charged Duty or not. Is it a gift, a new item from a retailer, spare part or whatever? The retailer has absolutely no control over whether Duty is charged or not. That's down to the U.K. C&E at the port of entry.

Best approach that.

I got stung once from America, seller included import taxes or so he claimed. Until it landed in the UK and I had to pay.

I’ve bought loads from Classic Minis Japan, they sell good quality stuff and as has always been stated by others if the items cost £££ there will always be tax, duty and handling to pay which is the buyers responsibility.

You have to factor it in, the calculations by Customs are easy to find so it shouldn’t be a shock.

Import taxes are such a lottery as to whether they get charged or not, there are companies you can buy insurance from that will refund to the same value if you are ‘hit’.

Nice to know thanks Graeme I will search next time, just annoying as not been charged in the past and the amount it puts on the original  cost,as I said earlier every days a school day never to old to learn.

Enough metaphors for this post lol.
