You have been unlucky, obviously everything doesn’t get checked. I’m not condoning this, but I heard that if you ask the company to mark it as a gift, its then not subject to VAT upto £39.

What you paid was VAT, more expensive items are also subject to customs duty:

What I tend to see (living in The Netherlands):
UPS and FEDEX will always impose the VAT and their import declaration charges when the value is above €22. (Sometimes they will grant "Gift" some extra "space")
Declaration charges are fixed per carrier (between €15 and 18). And then there is the 21% VAT to be added while slready oaid for in the country of origen.

So when ordering outside the EU, if its value is above the €22 I have to calculate
In the extra feesand VAT.

(Once got a T-shirt from the US sent as a gift making up for a mistake by that company but not declared as a gift. It was XXXL, I'm an L. It didn't fitt and I had to pay arround €28, before I got the parcell (I did not know of its contents) and saw whst the "gave" me: something I could never use that gad cost me money. "What a nice gift". ;)

And now the real kicker for all miniacs outside the UK: after de Brexit starts, for all mini parts send from the UK the same will apply ( including double paid VAT as the tax transfer within the EU (so you only pay TAX once) will not longer be present).

And fir a car from outside the EU, there is an extra 10% import duty and extra declaration charges, just like when we import a mini from Japan (which is almost impossible because of the missing COC certificates).

And if I buy an UK mini can even have problems if they don't allow the current COC certificates anymore as they are then from outside the EU. I'm realy worried..

Johnmar, there will not be double tax. The UK retailers will have to sell to the EU at no VAT and the local VAT will be applied be fir you collect or however the shipping company will work it.

today how it should work (not every company gets it right) the vat applied should be the rate of where the deliver is happening. So when buying from the UK when I lived in Sweden there should have been a VAT of 25% added while when I lived in Germany there should have been 19% added ( currently 16% till the end of the year). But like I said many companies had no idea and just put the UK VAT rate on.

Just something else here guys for people living in most countries.

Most countries will not add taxes / duties for certain categories of items. For some of us, that could be Vintage Car Parts and if the parts are used,Used Car Parts. It depends on just what your particular country of Import has and what they define as a 'Vintage Car' (for us in Aust, it's a car over 25 years old) and also what they define as 'Used' (for used parts). Some also have schemes a little more involved that if the items not manufactured locally and also for 'Private' or 'Personal' use, or (as we had here for a long while) under a certain value (excluding freight costs) so it can be worth exploring these avenues BEFORE you buy and be sure to let the seller know and exactly what you need them to include on the Customs Declaration that they need to fill in. Often, this is a description and a code.

I'll just add here to, that such schemes are a privilege and as such, should not be abused as you can be sure, if a few do abuse it, they'll make it harder or take it away, or you could just end up with a black mark against your name.

I have friends in the import export business tired of the UK TV adverts saying get ready for 1st Jan as the rules are changing.. they would get ready if Bozo and his incompetents had any idea themselves what the rules would be and could then impart them to us mere mortals so we could get ready...

I agree with Nick, Bozo the incompetent, chased the top Job, picked his cabinet for their Brexit stance rather than their competency or expertise, and once landed the Job, has no idea what to do with it... and we have 4 more years of this buffoon. I know Corbyn would have been "interesting", I feel we got Corbyn in a blonde wig

(Sorry rant over - This is a Mini site not a Party Political Broadcast)

thats a misunderstanding.
"the final day to place orders for DHL delivery to EU countries before the UK leaves the EU is December 18th. Any orders placed after this date will not arrive until January 2021 and could have any potential tariffs applied."
thats just that any orders AFTER the 18th cannot be guaranteed that they will arrive before brexit. it was just a heads up from them, not saying they will stop shipping.

UK Gov don't want to be the ones to say we pulled out of Brexit talks .. they want it very clear that the EU refused to compromise or recognise the UK as a separate state.

They were never going to get a deal as if the EU gave us one, they would have referendums all over the place (Didn't Belgium and Ireland want to leave but they didn't accept the results of their referendums and told them to vote again?!?).

EU would be left with the "basket-cases" and no funds to support them ... be interesting to see how long German last funding it all! :-)

I have been told that those in the EU aren't currently paying VAT on some of our items. The UK has a similar trade agreement coming into effect soon, so hopefily hit the sweet spot...
