When replacing the knuckles, is it good practice to pack the cup with grease or will a light smear of grease on the ball do the trick?  How about the outside of the cup where it fits into the trailing arm?

I usually clean out what ever is in them and put Moly Grease in them, they don't need much, just a heavy smear is more than enough.

Before fitting them back in the arm, as they can be a mission at times to get them out, I clean up the machined socket with a wire brush in the drill, then I do give the outside of the Cup a lick of just about any grease that close to hand (but not moly!), only to stop the socket rusting again. I started doing this some 35 years ago, and I've found every single one, even these that have been there for 35 years just lift out by the Pin, Cup and all.

Thanks, Chris. That’s pretty much what I did, but why not moly on the outside of the cup?

You could use Moly on the outside of the cup, however, my experience with Moly Grease is that as soon as you open the lid on the tin, it's in your hair, in your underpants, on the office books, on the dog, on the carpet, in your bed and on your missus. Then it gets worse when you get some out ! It's just horribly YUK !

Sounds like the same properties the sealant that the Boeing Company uses to seal fuel cells-it attacks you like something from a 70’s SCI-Fi space alien movie.

I'll agree with that .. when the CV boot split on my wife's new Alfa MiTo it went everywhere under the bonnet .. luckily it was under warranty and the dealer's cleaned it up .. but almost 11 years later there are still traces stuck on the bonnet and engine bay sound-proofing and they replaced some!
