Ive sourced a 3.2 cwp to go into my mk1. The crownwheel appears in good condition. The pinion has the tiniest wear mark on it on one tooth, and im starting to wonder should I replace it. The car is only a sunday driver so I wont be doing a lot of miles. itll be pushing about 70hp but I am spending quite a bit on the engine and box rebuild so I want it to be right.

What do people think ?

Ideally it should be replaced... if it breaks a tooth off it will probably wreck the crown wheel, and it floats around the g box and gets "picked up" by any of the other gears it will do catastrophic damage. But I confess, I would clean it up and use it...but I would not recommend others too

I'd replace if you can - the cost in time and money to replace at this point in the build will be a small fraction of what it would be if it failed when in use.

Might just be the photo, but the 2nd tooth back looks like it's rusted/pitted?

I've seen much worse and I would probably put that into an 850 or a 998, but in a 1275 I would think twice.

If you end up buying the crown wheel and pinion new then you'll more than likely have to get the bearing diameter ground/machined on the crown wheel as they are oversize by 0.1mm from memory.
