I did buy the gear box sender unit before the GPS unit  as advertised on Minispares and Digital Speedo's so I might remove the GPS and try the gearbox sender to eliminate the actual speedo, strange thing is though its reading the mileage okay and when I pass a speed safety camera (not a camera version) it reads the correct speed when working.

Update gents I fitted the koso gearbox sender unit connected up and it works and the speedo isn't sticking as previously mentioned just need to play around with the PPU to get the correct speed as it is reading 5-6 mph under, thanks for all the advice in the thread cheers

sorry to hijack thread- just got a digital speedo, which has been working fine for about 200 miles, but has recently been flip around the clock at random and showing 10 mph even when stationary.

Have had battery problems, going flat, and slight glow from ign light at idle revs.

Could this be a battery issue

They do need a fairly stable power source, if there's spikes from the charging system as a result of a bad (not just flat) battery, it can do what you are seeing. There can be other causes too, eg, the routing of the cable from the sensor is best kept away from all parts of the ignition system.

It seems like I have similar problem. My-70 is fitted with a 1275 SPI engine, and rebuild to a carb. My speedo went gone, and just have got a Smith's electroninc speedo with the Daytona 3 wire sensor from MiniSpares.

Before i put the new speedo in the car, i tested all with a drill conected to the sensor. All works perfect, with a stabil needle. All good so far..

After fitted the sensor to the gearbox, time to test and calibrate it. There comes the problem. The needle bouced fro 0 to 80 even in stabil speed.

Thinking there was a sensor problem, took it out again and tested with a drill. With ignition on, all ok. With engine running, the needle is bouncing. It looks like it got a interference problem some where.

Does anybody have  good way to get it fixed? The needle makes a litle bounce even when the sensor is not connected, and engine is running. I have a stabil 14,4 volt with engine running and, 12,3 volt when its off. I asume the speedo and the sensor are ok with 14,4volt..

Some of these can be time consuming to track down.

Just to narrow this down, try rolling down a hill a few times. Try it with the engine off (but key on) and with the engine idling in neutral.

Make sure your speedo wiring is routed away from the Alternator and the Ignition wiring. I actually run a screened wire for the speedo, while not a 'silver bullet' to deal with electrical noise, it can help. If you do this, only Earth the Screen at one end or you may make the problem worse.

Check all the connections in the wiring that they are tight and that when plugged together, they are 100% reliably connected. Sometimes with just the key on, wiggling each connection can show up issues here.

I have had one that would give the odd flicker, but was otherwise dead. It turned out that the shaft on the sensor wasn't quite long enough to engage the shaft in the gearbox, it appeared that it would occasionally touch it and that's what gave the flicker. I ended up pressing the shaft in the speedo drive out a little and then pressing a ball bearing in the back of the gear for it to run on and hold it up. Worked a treat.

Assuming that the shaft in the gearbox is the same as in my van, the Daytona shaft is rather a loose fit, so I put a piece of shrink-wrap on it to take up the slack. Ultimately I haven't used the Daytona sensor as I wasn't happy with the resolution from its 6-pulse/rev output. But it did work smoothly once I was over 20mph.

Testing and checking for the whole evening. The Daytona sensor was a litle bit loose, so i did the same: some shrink-wrap, and also a o-ring to make shure it fits and stays stabil .I have not any wiring close to alternator or ignition. BUT,

the ground wire for the sensor was to earth with the other ground wire in the speedo...(and there is a ground ignition wire there)  I took this of and made a new earth only for the sensor, and it is much more stabil now. Maby the ground wire was too close to the ignition wire behind the speedometer?

Not familiar with these but does the sensor not have a dedicated ground for it at the speedo?Steve..

No, theoretically it can be grounded anywhere, all my grounds run to one point, but that's just my ocd.

All the Hall Effect type Sensors I've had my hands on have had 3 wires, one of which is an Earth, they have been in a 3 Core type of cable. Given that the 'Pulse' wire needs to run to the Speedo, it is usually easiest to pick up Power and Earth at the Speedo.

Does the problem occur with suppressor resistence spark plugs/caps/wires in use? Proper plug gapping and non-fouled plug electrode may also help.
