Hi All

I'm in the process of doing a small restoration and have removed engine and subframe. The next job is to remove the steering rack as the gaitors need replacing.

My question, I have removed the securing mounts and unbolted the bottom bolt (clamp) on the steering column. Should I able to simply withdrawn the steering rack from the engine bay side?

In the haynes manual it suggests withdrawing the steering column from inside the car but ideally I don't want to have to do this as it involves cutting a grove in one of the bolts/screws which has been designed to be removed easily.

Thanks in advance.

as long as you've removed the bolt from the clamp i don't see why you shouldn't be able to - putting it back again afterwards will require someone in the car to guide the clamp back onto the rack pinion though

you'll probably want to fix the bottom of the steering column somehow (brace it against the pedal box ?) before removing the rack as it'll want to drop which may end up twisting the parcel shell lip out of shape

it has to be said though, that at some point you are going to want/need to deal with the remains of the shear bolts that bolt to the parcel shelf in order to overhaul the steering column bushes - it's not usually a massive problem getting them out, and once they're out just replace them with normal bolts to make life easier for the next time
