Hi Everyone

I am new to the forum but have a question I am struggling with.  I have just had the clutch replaced by a mini specialist, however, I now notice at idle there is a massive vibration through the dashboard, and increasingly last time I used it through the driver's seat.  It only seems to be happening at idle as when driving it seems OK...

A Google search has suggested this is to do with the flywheel and maybe the clutch being fitted badly. Any suggestions as to what it might be and how to proceed greatly received.  Also if I drive the car is it likely to damage anything?

Car is a 1989 Mini 30

cheers Rich

First thing I would do is lift the bonnet and see if you can rock the engine.

but I would be taking it back to the specialist and as them to rectify the issue

what clutch type is it and what was exactly replaced?

Hopefully just an engine mounting, they may have re fitted the old one and it was passed it best and failed when disturbed, but as Nick says, back to the supplier / fitter

I have this issue too on my 1993 sprite 1275 A+ carb engine, verto clutch.

What I do is just turn the idle up to 900/1000 rpm and the vibration is gone, I'm unsure what damage it will do by working round it, however it's been 2 years and 10,000 miles so far.

So a question, with the above vibration at idle (quite noticible too as the steering wheel and column shave violently on my car) does my fix (bodge?!) do any damage?

No movement from engine mountings or stabilisers as these were renewed along with the clutch.

Thanks guys 😁

The cure is to have the new clutch and flywheel balanced. I do quite a few and the out of balance mass as supplied on some clutches beggars belief!

Best case is a loose engine mount/steady.
But Probably an unbalanced pressure plate/flywheel combination.

Thanks guys

Had a look - engine mounts were new for an MOT a year or so back so look ok. Will be having it back to the guy who fixed it on Monday,

Out of interest how is the pressure plate/flywheel balanced?

The old clutch apparently wasn't too worn but was slipping badly - was covered in oil as a seal had gone apparently so new clutch was fitted.. worked ok getting home (20 min drive) but when next used a week or so later noticed the vibration, which has since got worse.. only at idle though.... not when rpm is over 1000 or so...

Balancing the pressure plate and flywheel can be done on a master crank that is already balanced.

There is a video here that shows it:
