Rear Subframe Captive Nut Broken : (

Hi All 

 

When I removed my rear subframe the head of one of the bolts broke off which was annoying but not the end of the world. Today I have weld something on to what was left of the bolt in an attempt to wind it out. It appears this has just cased more problem as I think the captive nut has snapped off. 

 

It appears that the car has had the outer sill replaced at some point and so there does not appear to be any access to the the captive nut area. Any idea or suggestion on what to do would be great.

Probably the best would be to cut a window in the sill by the captive nuts so you can  gain access to weld in a repair. You could go through where the nuts are, but you wouldn't really know what you're trying to weld to.

Dependant on the condition of the outer panel will decide how you tackle this. To start cut off anything you have welded on and punch what is left of the captive nut into the void. If what is left is good and sound, good enough to take a weld, machine a bush with the hole threaded to suit the subframe fixing bolt and the outside diameter a suitable size so you can enlarge the panel hole and weld the bush in. dress the weld off. The hole centres will remain.

If the panel is good you could try a cinch nut, a quick fix and once bolted up should be OK ?.

If you feel the panel is not up to this type of repair then it will have to be cut out and a new "corner" made up with suitable fixings, then welded in.

You do not say if it is a top or bottom fixing but this method will do for either.

thanks for the response everyone. 

 

Going to take a proper look at things tomorrow and get some pictures. I pretty sure the panel is in good condition.

You have a couple of options. One is to do the access via the sill like this

But you may end up finding more than you bargain for. However at least going through the sill you can add extra weld to the other captive nut as well so its the lessor of two evils.d58a5b8fc7a08dc76d19e6b4b8f36c9a906eb12c

 

If its the upper one you can go down this route which we opted to do on my lads cars as we had just had him painted. Cut a large enough hole on the inner sill stiffener / companion bin closeout panel.

I recently had to do as shown in the first photo.
That way you can ensure secure fitting of the nut, check the other nut and once welded back together and painted the job is done correctly.
