Hello, I am looking to fit 4.5 x 10 minilite-type wheels to my 1986 Mini City that has S front hubs and rear spacers.  One issue concerns how to ensure they will stay inside the bodywork (no arches) so any feedback on which make of rim actually achieves that (as they all claim to) and whether a few millimetres tolerance would normally be allowed by an MOT tester: it could otherwise be an expensive purchase...

Most images and cars I've actually seen in real life seem to protrude a little, both the rim, tread and tyre wall.  I will be running 165s by the way, the car is 1330cc and intended for fast road use only.

The other issue is quality.  A lot of stuff for the classic car market isn't of a great standard...and there seems to be a difference in warranty terms for structural problems, some offering a lifetime whereas others for only 12 months, which does not inspire confidence.  Some suppliers state that the wheel has met various regulatory approvals, the material it's manufactured from etc...others very little.  There is also a disparity in price between what appear to be broadly identical wheels of around 20%, and I'm not so sure you do get what you pay for these days.

Any advice on what to look for or some informed feedback on do's and don'ts, even down to specific brands would be appreciated, bearing in mind the intended use.

Cheers

Before the resto I ran 4.5” Cooper S rims ( not reverse S ) with 165 tyres with no issues at all going through two MOTs.

Thank you for responses, suggestions and images - in such short time too.  From the side of the red/black roof car it's hard to tell but looks fine.  Very grateful for suggestion to Join TMF+ and that very handy discount.

Cheers

The minispares ones fit lovely. They look amazing as well. I had some on my old mk3 and they seemed to last a lot longer without the rims pitting like cheap ones.

I've recently bought some of the minspares 4.5" wheels (from back when they were called minilife). They are used and 10 years old and still look this good! The wheel nuts are stainless steel, so they don't rust or flake like the chrome ones can. They also fit without any clearance issues around the bleed nipple

And some of them fitted to another car

Thank you Quinlan Minor and timmy850.  That's reassuring to see your cars and the fit of the wheels.  As an aside, they just look great!!

I'd still welcome any comments on the approvals and quality issues.  Many years ago a friend bought a (new) Minilite copy which was porous.  I previously owned a Frogeye and the excellent Midget-Sprite Club newsletters posted frequent articles about non-functioning brake light switches and wishbones that sheared - clearly very poor far-east copies but sold through household name suppliers here in the UK.   From my campervan club it is apparent that some aftermarket alloy wheels that fit and appear intended for Sprinters etc. are not suitable for the weight.

Sorry, I might be worrying excessively here but I'd prefer to check this through before committing.

Cheers,

In my view the Minilite wheels are a more faithful reproduction of the original 60s style Tec-del than the Minilife sold by Minispares. The spokes have a nicer profile and the outer rim isn't so thick and flat. Having said that I had a set of 12" minilife wheels previously which looked well but I found the lacquer wasnt great quality on them. That was nearly 25 years ago mind you, (where does the time go?  :ohno: ) on a daily driven Mini through all weathers, quality control maybe improved and if youre not ploughing through salty winter roads maybe it wouldnt be an issue.
