My '88 mini has a different inner panel on the boot lid than other mini's i've seen. Is this an early lid type, unobtanium, or fairly common?

Mk2 minis and possibly late mk1's had the double skinned boot lid but yours looks like a fairly rare (assuming it's an original leyland panel) very early mk3 boot lid as it has the 3 holes to allow fitment of the mk3 number plate light and I assume it has the mk3 outer skin. In the 80's my friend had a 69 850 mk3 that had this type of boot lid, it was rusty even then.
I have read that a few late Mk2's had this early mk3 lid as they'd run out of mk2 outer skins.

There were some reproduction ones that came with the double skin and mk3 outer.

As above, after market double skin mk3 boot lids are available. I don't ever remember seeing factory fitted double skin boot lids on 80's minis when I used to work on them when they were new.
The boot lid shown in the OP's post is designed to use the early type boot lid mounted seal, not the body mounted seal.

Does that not allow water to easily get between the two skins?

Water ingress has never been a problem. The body seal curves outwards and seals on the edge of the folded over boot skin. The numberplate lamp seal has to be in good order.Steve..

Thx for the responses. Interesting to know what ive got. I guess the lid has been replaced on this car at some stage. No obvious signs of a colour change , though car appears to be a maroon red on some interior sections like dash rails, not the brighter red now everywhere else.
The boot seal appears to be sealing out water just fine. I have sprayed inside the lid openings with cavity wax.

One other point, have the minispares lid liner millboard kit. Been hesitant to drill holes in the inner skin. Does having this odd type skin make fitment a concern?

The ribs may make the board stand 'high' around the edges of the inner frame.
I'd imagine the board would sit tight to the edges of the single skinned boot lid.
