It is still possible to pick up a Mini for not a lot if you are willing and able to do the necessary restoration work yourself.
My Grandson 'Cooperkid' bought back the 998 which he sold over 8 years ago. It had been sadly neglected and he paid £950 for it.
I did the body resto and full re-painting. He is doing the reassembly and interior. I have stripped and checked the engine and gearbox and donated a pair of HS2's and manifold/linkages.
Although a 1986 car, it is a sort-of 1960s 998 Cooper tribute.
Once complete it will have cost in total around £2800 and be in top condition.
The key to classic car ownership is being either able to do all the work yourself or being wealthy!
