After a break of 5-6 years I’m considering returning to the fold and looking for a suitable mini. Log in to have a look in the for sale section and there’s nothing there. What’s going on? (this is not a wanted thread simply trying to understand why the for sale section is blank)

There is an auto archiving of inactive posts. Post over 30 days are archived. As are posts when they are sold ...

Sadly most forums are not as busy as 5-6 years ago due to Facebook....you may also find asking prices for Minis have increased quite a bit since.

As above, forum traffic is not as it was, and the asking price for our little friends can be staggering at times.

Looking on eBay and wow have prices gone up. My lovely sports pack would sell for double what I sold it for !

Even basket case are increasing in price and some are just plain day dreaming.

 

There are still bargains out there but just need to search that little bit harder and unfortunately not really on here, although the odd gem does show up.

 

The other thing now on TMF is the requirements for selling on here which means 150 posts or TMF+ membership. Without meeting those requirements you cannot sell on TMF.

It is not just Minis which are increasing in value. It seems that all classics are going the same way.
Take a look at the asking prices for the Mk.1 Capri, Mk.1 Cortina and VW Beetle in original condition or 'period modified'.
Still affordable cars from the Mini era seem to be the Triumph 2000 and Rover P6, except for the V8 version.

I would agree that lots of classic cars values are increasing as they become rarer, the TV show Bangers and Cash is quite interesting showing classic car auctions held by Mathewsons, there are some bargains on there and some interesting Minis, one that springs to mind was a 1 owner 1995 Mini Cooper which had covered over 200,000 miles on the original engine and gearbox, it sold for £2500.

You might think they are 'dear' now compared to 5 - 6 years ago, however, keep in mind that the prices are all only going one way. Buy wisely now and you can be reasonably assured in 5 years time it would sell for more than what you paid now.

I would say there are actually less minis for sale than a "few" years ago. People hanging onto good ones and fewer available as more get scrapped (booo!)

 

I say a "few" years ago as I didn't really notice when it happened (because it was gradual I expect) but on ebay, when I was looking for a second mini, I guess about 7-8 years ago, there used to be 3-4 pages using "classic mini" as a search term (say 600-700 with 200 p/p) and now it only just goes to 2 pages (200+ but rarely gets to 300 - 224 this evening just looked) and sometimes only one page so less than 200) - does figure with your 5-6 year gap

 

As for prices, still cheaper than a Beetle (by some way) or an Escort (by a country mile!)

It is still possible to pick up a Mini for not a lot if you are willing and able to do the necessary restoration work yourself.
My Grandson 'Cooperkid' bought back the 998 which he sold over 8 years ago. It had been sadly neglected and he paid £950 for it.
I did the body resto and full re-painting. He is doing the reassembly and interior. I have stripped and checked the engine and gearbox and donated a pair of HS2's and manifold/linkages.
Although a 1986 car, it is a sort-of 1960s 998 Cooper tribute.
Once complete it will have cost in total around £2800 and be in top condition.
The key to classic car ownership is being either able to do all the work yourself or being wealthy!

For me, and I guess like many others, the fun is in doing some of it yourself at least, even if I won the lottery tomorrow and could afford a coverted 60s Cooper 'S (my dream car) I would stil do most of the work myself regardless of how minted I might become .. many non Car Nutters do not get the satisfaction of actually being able to say I did that.. back in the day we built "race" engines in the shed, the pride when we beat better funded "factory" equipped guys was immense, you cant buy that satisfaction no matter how minted you are

I recently sold my mk2 cooper and made a small profit from buying in Feb this year. I hope to find a tidy early mk3 next year after my garage has been rebuilt. I've got a clio 182 and they are rising in price too so I would say it's any car that can rekindle nostalgia is on the up. I'd love a metro turbo just for that reason alone as it was my first car.

I wouldn't have thought Mini prices can go up much more when people are asking £30k for Coopers and even vans.
Classic car values can go up and down with the economy.....and that's in a precarious position,no one knows what the future will be like post Covid,Brexit and environmental legislation.
I certainly wouldn't be buying a classic car today with the expectation it will me make money....hope yes, expectation no
