Hi I am a new owner of a 1991 mini city E and want to do an oil change 

 

Do I need to replace the washer on the drain bolt and If so do I need 3 as the classic mini spares website says?  many thanks!

You can change it or if it is not damaged you can just anneal it.  There are 3 of those washers used on the engine but you only need one for the sump.

Never replaced a copper washer in 40 years on any classic - never a leak.

Can use a dowty washer.  They seal well.  Don't over-tighten the sump plug - if you strip the thread it's hell!

Of late, I've been fitting a Fibre Washer between the Copper Washer and the Sump, then the Plug only needs a light nip. They supposedly have a short life, but I've done quite a few changes now on the same washer. I picked them up in a blister pak, there's 10 in there for less than a 5-er.
