Had the head off my 1990 998cc City to replace a blown head gasket over Christmas and on starting reassembly found that I’d dislodged one of the tappets when removing the pushrods. I took the cover off the back of the block to sort out the tappet so that’s done, and ordered a new pair of tappet cover gaskets as both appear to have been seeping so seems like a good opportunity to fit new ones. Should these be fitted dry, or with a smear of red hermatite to help seal them up? Also I thought a rubber bush and cup washer should be fitted to the mounting bolt to help seal it, these are not present on my car so wondering if they’re missing or were they not fitted to later 998 engines? I fit them up dry.
Yes, there should be the Cup and Rubber Seal on the Bolt. Be sure the Bolt has a plain shank section where the seal sits, otherwise the oil will travel up the Thread.

Thanks for the reply Spider, the bolts look correct as they have the plain shank so hopefully with new gaskets, bushes and cup washers I’ll cure the seeping oil issue.

Don’t over tighten the either - otherwise the cover will deform and it will be more likely to leak
