I need to repair my battery box due to rust.  I think the washer bottle was leaking fluid and caused the problems.

I want to consider changing the battery and better tie down.  I currently use group 26 battery which is 8.5" x 7" x 7.5"   It is one of the smallest batteries available in the US.  It fills the box and is difficult to get a good tie down to hold in place.

Show me how you have mounted your battery...

Amazing battery. So small .. I don't know if it would be enough to turn my engine with the cold it is doing in the morning.

If the question is not much, what liquid does that tube have?

That’s a fuel line connected to the RH side tank.

thanks Timmy! And wouldn't it be safer to carry it from the bottom like all the tanks on the left side, so as not to be so close to the battery in case of leakage inside the boot?

Regards

That’s how the factory always linked the tanks together. The right side has a long metal pipe that goes across the boot, joins the LH tank and then down through the floor. There is also a battery cover and boot board that can go on top of the battery to prevent them touching.

Probably not 100% ideal, but that’s how we all do it

Here is a picture with what I came up with.  I found the metal bar in my boxes of Mini bits.  I found the eye-bolts at the hardware store.

I still need to get a new battery with reversed posts (Group 26R).  This would put ground post closer to the boot lid.

I will shorten the bolts.

That looks pretty much like the right (standard) way to do it.
Normally one bolt is an eye, the other is a hook.  You can also fit small hooks for the strap to secure the cardboard cover with.

My battery fits so tightly into the hole that it doesn't need any support. Nothing moves.

On my 68 Elf restoration I've removed the battery box completely, with modern smaller batteries my intention is to locate it in the wing behind the wheel arch - anyone else gone down this route? My thinking is by removing the battery box I will have a smoother underside less susceptible to stone chips etc leading to rust?
