Hi there, I have a '94 Mini 35 in generally sound condition.  I found the bulkhead soundproofing was in bad condition and wee bit damp; also the interior soundproofing under the carpets by the heater area and across to the floor was quite damp.  I've removed it and the way its designed it will probably always hold water if it gets wet.

I've now ripped it out and binned much of it - fortunately the bulkhead (inside & outside) is in really good condition.

Does anyone have any thoughts on alternative soundproofing that won't hold water?

Cheers

With regards the interior sound deadening it is probably a good idea to see where the moisture is coming from.

Any sign of a leak in the heater matrix?

Might also be worth checking the windscreen seal and scuttle lip where the seal sits!
Also check around the fresh air eyeballs vents in case there’s holed metal due to excessive corrosion.

Cheers, Steve.

Whereabouts, specifically?

It can collect damp from a number of sources -  fresh air vents, scuttle closing panels under the wings, windscreen seal, door check-strap seals, Ingress from the roof gutter via the A pillars....

You could line suspect areas with "witness" paper towels.

Thanks all, I'll inspect the heater matrix first. Are they prone to failure?

Goes without saying that everything is prone to failure, depending on age, esp with older cars. The heater is more prone to failure around the 2 jubilee clips coming undone, being knocked, or the rubber pipe going hard and there not being a great seal. Heater matrix do also fail or get blocked and cause leaks.
