If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

There's loads of these win a car competition companies springing up. I'm not convinced they're all genuine

Hi Moke, would you recommend a similar platform to ebay that is less "scamming" ?

by the way I agree with everything that has been said above, in my opinion ebay, twitter, facebook, all do NOT enough to protect /  help their users, and of course they are just in it for the money they do not care about their users...

On the size and scale of sleazbay, no.

The thing with any broad platform like ebay and I guess facebook etc, is that because they have such a big reach it equally attracts sellers, buyers, tyre kickers and scammers. To me, this is not limited to ebay and the others, but just the world wide web in general. While it has bought convenience to many of us, it's also been a boon for scammers - crooks - they don't even need to leave home now to carry out their crimes. The manufacturers of Balaclavas must hate the web. I could go on and on about the web, how it's made us complacent and for it's convenience and (perceived) money saving, it carries a fairly high price, but in ways we don't automatically tie in with that cheap widget we just bought.

What really gets up my nose in a big way about ebay and similar platforms is for the fees they charge - both to seller and buyer - they do very little for it other than to host a web site. Hey,,,,,, 'we' do the same here on the forum,,,, but it's free and I think with better protections in place,,,, that's something to reflect on.

There's plenty of other options, though because they are a bit more obscure, they attract less sellers, buys, tyre kickers and scammers. One great option that is quite targeted is our Forum. It's not a guarantee that it's going to be scam free, however, you have the ability to see if the member selling has any long standing presents or if they are fresh and need to be handled accordingly. Other members here will also be very quick to let their concerns be known and likewise, praise.

For me, I do a little 'horse trading' through Facebook and some on the forum too. I don't advertise anything, but when I see someone looking for something and if I can help out, I'll send them a PM. It's slower, for sure, but it's also much more secure.

There's also the old school way of doing transactions too - face to face. Does anyone remember doing that ?

:D Yes Moke the Face to Face is / was always the best.. I purchased mist of my "hoardings" (Tut no one else wants) from boot sales and car shows but COVID in 2020 put paid to that, and at the moment despite UK Gov promises (not worth  a...) 2021 is not shaping up to be much better it will be Xmas before most of us here in the UK get vaccinated so I cannot see many shows on this year sadly

I actually dont even have an ebay account anymore I refuse to use it after my account was hacked, yet another clever scam I guess (we have TradeMe which is the local equivelant and generally very good).

This scam was also quite elaborate, I guess to try avoid getting phsically caught, they had hacked my account, and they rather than just stealing card details, had used it to purchase goods which obviously didnt exist. Fortunately due to the quick email notifications that my password had changed and I had made these purchases I managed to recover access to my account, I contacted eBay support and someone actually called me the next day which I was suprised about. Of course the sellers account had disappeared so wasn't much they could do, I had already contact my bank and had the charges reversed and card blocked. But lesson learned, I know its my own fault for having card details saved (in all honesty I've only brought off ebay once and didnt even realise it had saved them).

Im sure heaps of us can think of numerous different ones that the internet proliferates by allowing people to hide behind a screen.

My wife was on the phone for well over an hour not so long ago with some guy trying to sell dodgy bitcoin investments, I knew it was a scam as soon as i heard what she was on about, but she would'nt believe me. Then she says oh they just want me to download this program so they can help me setup a bank transfer. Ahh hell no seriously, they want you to give them remote access to my computer while your logged into internet banking, that doesnt strike you as a little strange at all O_O

It's a disgrace that they keep appearing all the time. I see some people bid them up to silly money just to ruin the advert which is funny to see. They only last a day or so but it only takes a click and view for someone to get caught out.

I think (?) this tactic started with the Yamaha RD250LC groups, I agree it's funny to see stuff bid up to maybe £60K plus.

The only trouble it causes is that misinformed potential sellers use ebay as a price reference point, they then think their vehicle is really worth these staggering sums.

eBay don't care, they are making money from the listing fees.

Firstly the cars photographed arent in their possession or for sale.

Make contact with them outside of ebay like they ask.

Youll then be told via email the vehicle is in a much further away location than advertised due to work.

You will be sent a lot of fake ID to prove the seller is genuine.

You will be encouraged to pay a holding company through Ebay whilst you receive delivery of the vehicle and only once you are happy with the vehicle will the money be released to the seller.

The last bit is true but only for they American market.

What youll actually do is pay the seller and the car will never appear.

And because its a bank transfer you will never see the money again.

Bank transfers are covered in law now, I don't know if there is a limit but they are covered.

Very risky but a lot of people still fall for it. Ebay and other platforms should have a screening on every products before they display it for the sake of the customers.

I very much doubt they are covered if you willingly make a transaction to fraudulent item, outside of eBay.

It seems amazing to most of us that someone would fall for these scams today, as they've been around for quite a while now - but they still work obviously....

I have a good friend - a grown intelligent business owner - fall for one of these. In this one he called and the car belonged to the son of the man he was talking to - said son had just died in Afghanistan and father was distraught and just wanted the car out of his garage as it was a constant reminder of his loss. Car was supposedly about 2 hours away. My friend sent the check and arranged to get the car that weekend......when he arrived the address was a vacant lot.......cost him $3K.

I agree, if you or a trusted friend can't put eyes and hands on it - it doesn't exist.

My thoughts too hence why I asked for a link. Will wait and see if he is able to provide one.
