Hi all

I'm looking at getting my 998 a plus head converted to unleaded fuel. after looking around i sent an email to rob walker asking for a price for the conversion and they quoted me £350 plus vat which seems a lot to me, I've looked through other forums that say £150 that are older but I wouldn't expect it to have increased in price that much.

what do you guys think

Many thanks

George

Here is what Turbo Phil quoted me back in 2017. (copy and paste of an email)

It's £110 for the unleaded conversion. To replace the valve guides, ream to size, recut the valve seats and reassemble the head is £70.
The intake valves are £7.20 each, the exhausts are £8.40 each, standard springs are £1.96 each, guides are £1.46 each, stem seals are £0.62 each or the better MPI seals are £1.82 each.
I'm in Cumbria, but postage is only about £15. Hope that helps.

INLET VALVE(7.20X4) £28.80
EX. VALVE(8.40X4) £33.60
SPRINGS. (1.96X4) £15.68
GUIDES. (1.46X8) £11.68

Mpi Stem seals ( do you recommend 4 or 8?)
1.82 x4 £7.28
1.82 x8 £14.56

TOTAL (MINUS POST) (8 MPI stem seals) £285

(+ £15 for postage (2017 price))

Going rate. Minispares will probably have an exchange for a little less.

Why do you want it converted, I woudl just use it until you need to refurb it, or consider a good second hand one that is already "unleaded", unless of course your head is something special.

Also personal trait of mine the effort / cost of rebuilding a std head with new guides, valves seals etc etc, I would be looking at an uprated / flowed head rather than spending all that money to rebuild a head to bog standard, but that is just my opinion.

I am having a12g202 head done at the moment

It is being fully ported, chambers opened up, new unleaded seats, head skimmed to correct compression ratio new valves and guide bushes, new double springs and Collets

It’s costing me £720

I think that’s a good price compared to a new staged head

Only a guess here but I think the figure of £150 would only be to fit the seats only. You can be sure it will need guides, seals and other parts on top and in any event, I'd suggest while it's off and in bits, give the head a birthday and have it fully overhauled.

I agree, considering the time it takes for the machining alone

You can't expect people to work for nothing

Quality parts cost money - time is money

You could always go buy the machinery - parts - and do it all yourself - can of worms there for someone

Given what Cal has quoted - the price of 350 plus VAT seems reasonable. I'm still on the lead additive - and have been since the mid 90's

There's a good bit of work goes into a head to use unleaded

I thought the A+ heads already had hardened seats?

Here is a list of unleaded engine numbers for the 998cc engines.

99HF15, 99HF32, 99HG30, 99HG31, 99HG32, 99HG33, 99HG34, 99HG39, 99H/D81P, 99H/E20, 99H/E21, 99H/E22, 99H/F16.
All the post 1990 1275 mini engines are unleaded compatible, many of them have CATs so can only use unleaded. None of the pre 89 engines, or sizes other than 998 and 1275 can use unleaded, with out modification.

Information Received from Barrett''s MG-Rover, Folkestone.
