Hi

Sorry if it is not strictly relevant. I am a sort of newbie and looking to buy this mini which is for sale. It has obviously been restored in the past. What do people think about the front opening bonnet lid?

What would be the average sale price for something like this

Having the flip front will lower the value of the car. any more details on it? Engine size and mileage, does it have oversills fitted, is there any rust on it? Does it have MOT? etc

Here is more info, 1993 Rover Mini. no MOT but passed last one in 2015. Has oil leak and 1275cc engine.

Bodywork generally in good condition, no mention of rust (it has been dry stored)

Have a very careful look (if you're able to) or ask the buyer for some photos of the floor, sills etc.

Oversills would be a worry - try to establish that it has the correct vented type.

More seriously, personally I wouldn't be keen on the flip front (safety, insurance, etc) but there are different opinions about this.

Is that water droplets on the bonnet or lumps in the gel coat?

it doesn't look a good car for a newbie, unless it's remarkably cheap to buy and you have money for the expense to come, once you've bought it.

Have you got the reg number so you can look up the MOT history online for rust, welding repairs, etc. Personally I would want to know why someone was selling without an MOT if there are no major problems and I would not recommend a newbie to Minis to buy one without a recent pass, as a shiny paint job and filler can hide a multitude of hidden horrors, not to mention the mechanical problems that can arise in a car left standing unused since 2015.

Those are all good points, but it really doesn't matter whether anyone else likes the look of the car except you. you're not buying it for an investment, it's a car - something to drive and use.

Makes sure it's in good shape and go from there. What is the asking price?

Price is miles off. Id give £3500 though. Assuming there is zero rust.

I'd take someone along to inspect it for you. 'Previous restoration' could be anything from a back alley paint job to a careful and comprehensive mechanical and bodywork overhaul. Even then if it's been sitting for years some of that good work may have come undone. It can stressful buying something you're unsure of but it can be fun too if you're armed with the right information, and there are many good examples out there. There's no rush.

As above it is strong money for what it is.

Looking at the photos, I think this is a bitsa car, made of out of other cars. Which is all well and good, and often legit, but it could also be bad sign too.

The giveaways are the Racing Green/Racing Flame/Checkmate seats which are from 1989/90, combined with the fact it has the black door handles and boot handle from the same model, plus fixed rear windows, from that model too. Of course these features appeared on other models too.

People don't blank the reg number out for no reason, they perhaps don't want you to see the MOT history.

No photos of engine bay either.

I'd be asking lots of questions, and be interested to get hold higher res photos before going near it, as theres a reg number engraved to the windows, if this doesn't match the displayed reg, walk away.

The other thing is, with a flip front, you will need to declare that and any other mods to your insurance, so get some quotes, but you'll need the reg number first.

In my humble opinion, if you have £5k to spend, there are better ways to spend it, I would look for a straight unmolested example, there will be more coming for sale in the next few months I'd hope.
