1969 Cooper S mk2

After a full rebuild, and installing a new clutch, flywheel, seal, bearing, return spring and slave/master the car FEELS like it will go into/select each gear, but remains in neutral.

I've bled the clutch lines and there is good movement of the arm and at the pedal.

I really don't want to have to remove the brake booster to get to the clutch cover etc if I don't have to, but could I have installed the clutch incorrectly? It's pretty basic and I'm sure I got it right.

But what could it be? Could something else be broken internally? Could the remote linkage be mis-aligned?

any suggestions would be great.

No, it feels like it's in gears, but won't catch

As far as I can tell, its movement is clean, smooth and has a little play.

Clutch isn’t the problem if you can’t select them with the engine off.

I tried putting it in gear and pushing it, it appears to still be in neutral. Any idea?

When you jacked the engine up to change the clutch, did you bend the selector mechanism at all.... yours should be the remote setup, so I would disconnect that and see if you can then select the gears with the engine off. if you have the rod linkage (unlikely) check you havent bent the rod(s).

Do you feel it ‘clicking’ into gear?
If yes, your clutch is not engaging rather than disengaging .
If you don’t see the clutch lever or similar items stuck, then it’s time to disassemble.

I've just rebuilt my '68 S.  Not bled the clutch yet but the gears work.  You should be able to select all the gears with the engine switched off.  You should be able to feel the car is in gear by pushing it. if it's in gear, the car will jump and be difficult to move.  The fan will move as you push.

If you can select each gear and it engages with the engine, then your gear linkage is correct.  Have you re-adjusted the throw out stop and clutch arm since you fitted the clutch?

You could look down the back of the engine to see if the gear selector mechanism is moving when you (or an assistant) select a gear.  They are normally quite notchy so you'll know if it's going into gear or not.

Trying to work out what would happen if you put the clutch plate in backwards.  Without a clutch, if you select a gear and the linkage is working, then it will crunch, grind.  Pushing the clutch pedal disconnects the drive.  If the plate was in the wrong way round would it not be engaged at all?

Paul
