At the end of June 2020 I bought a 1989 Mini Rose as a project. It was fitted with a 1380cc motor, 286 mega-dyne cam, stage 3 head and was fitted with twin HIF4 carbs. I want to get rid of the twin carbs and replace them with a ?

My initial thoughts were a HIF44, but what needle to start with?

If there are any other suggestions please feel free to state your case, with reasons why.

Thanks in anticipation.

You're right that HIF44 would be most suitable.  Your Twin HS2s would most likely provide a touch more low down torque if set up properly (i.e. tuned, balanced, and not leaking air through the throttle shaft).

On needle selection, wisest to go to a rolling road/specialised tuner - perhaps using one of the needles on this page to nurse the car over there:

If they are twin HIF4 then they are 1.5” and equivalent to an HS4

Any reason you’d take them off? Is the engine currently tuned and running well?
