Mini Magazine are asking those with a long memory to help if they recognise this Mini. In the February 2021 issue they are trying to trace the history of this 1961 Austin Seven. The car has recently been returned to the UK from a long stay in the USA by Mike Brewer (he now has 3 Minis, the 3rd is green with an especially interesting story which will be revealed soon in a future magazine).
They are trying to find out more about the Mini's earlier history. It was built 4th May 1961 at Cowley, and then despatched to 'Swain and Jones' in Farnham, Surrey. It was originally Speedwell Blue with a Blue/Grey interior. Beyond that...
They believe the car was restored in the UK - someone might remember it being painted in that very distinctive red (or fitting of the now, almost matching, red interior) - and was sold to its late American owner Phil Reed in Brighton for £2950 on 20th November 1981. It's a long time ago, but the Mini habit tends to be for life, so there may just be someone who remembers this car. The UK registration has been lost and Mike is keen to track down the registration number. If you have any info, no matter how small, please drop Mini Magazine a line at [email protected].

I would have thought they could find it via someone in the motor trade who has access to Experian Autocheck or similar to input the vin/chassis no. and therefore find the reg number?

Blimey it must have been a minter in 1981, as that’s £11k in today’s money.

Secondly Mike is in the motor trade, so they must have tried that.

They should try the American side, surely it would have needed the V5 to import it.

If anyone thinks they might recognise it -the original number plate would have been 3 numbers then 3 letters.

The first letter should be U,V or W (or poss even X, or Y) the last 2 letters being PC (April 1961on Surrey registration area identifier).
