No Electrics

Best Answer Its a min , 31 January 2021 - 12:25 AM

I had a problem once with the main positive lead from the back to the front

Just something for the pot

Sorted. It was the positive feed lead making a poor contact.

Thanks

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help.

1989 998cc A+

The car had been stopped for a month or so whilst trying to sort out an ignition problem (eventually turned out to be a faulty coil) I tried starting the little blighter yesterday (with new coil fitted) and once warmed up, ran nice and sweet.

As I wasn't sure if I'd get a chance to get back, I disconnected the battery earth. Anyway, today I got a chance to go to the garage and tried to start her up. It cranked over a couple of times but wouldn't start. After giving it 5 mins rest, I tried to turn the engine over and it clicked a couple of times, like when the battery doesn't have enough power, but nothing. Then, the clicking stopped (only tried twice) and I had no electrics. There's no warning alternator light when I turn the key, no dash, hazards or headlights.

I checked the battery and had a good 12.8V so the battery is good. Checked all the fuses in the fuse box and none blown.

As there is very little light at the garage, and I had not taken my work lights, I left with my tail between my legs with the hope to get back next weekend to try and find the problem.

So, as I'm no auto-electrician, I have a week hoping you good folk will be able to come up with some advice and suggestions on what may have caused this and what, and how, to check the various possible faults please.

Cheers all.

Hi,

Thanks for the post.

The earth lead on the battery was nice and tight and I'd checked it was clean but as mentioned, there isn't much light and I didn't have any work lights with me so will check again.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the post.

Definitely one to check. I'll get the probe out to check power is getting to the starter motor.

Thanks again.

Quick question.

Please ignore my ignorance but could a faulty alternator cause complete loss of electrics?

Cheers.
