Usually the pot joints are fitted before you fit the engine, it is easier.
The joint has a snap ring that needs to be shock compressed. If the ring integrity is good and the joint is lined up as you say a sharp knock with a mallet will seat it. It may be best to work from under the wing using something like a piece of wood dowling as an extension.

Be aware that if the joint is forced towards the diff it is possible that the C ring can be distorted and will jam the whole assembly. I usually use a piece of 4x2 timber vertically down from the engine top and use it to lever the joint in rather than tapping with a universal spanner.

It'll be the C Clip as the other guys have suggested. The C Clip may have been replaced at some earlier point and in doing so, expanded too much an end can come out of the groove and the Joint goes on. As Whistler says, forcing it when they get to this point will only result in it Jamming.
Remove the Joint and check the C Clip. If you can push one side in to the groove with your finger and the other side comes clear of the Splines, then it's been over-expanded. You maybe able to remove it, bend it back in tight, at this point, I bend the ends in a wee bit tighter than the rest of the clip so that they don't pick up on the Joint when removing it down the track. When refitting it, only open it just enough to slip over the splines and no more.
It's actually a lucky find. If it fell in to the slot in such a position that the Joint could be refitted, when removing the next time it would become quite an ordeal.

As said the c clip can cause problems. Is it a new pot joint or has it been fitted previously? The new pot joints are usually oversize, I found this out when I was fitting mine and couldn't get it in

Put some thick, sticky grease on the C clip so it does not droop down and try to align it to be concentric with the splines. Try again the installation.

If you have some play left in the driveshaft you can gently knock it with a hammer and a bit of wood and it should come back off.
If you have zero play split the top ball joint and it should give you some extra space.
They can be a pain.
