Strip down of my Clubman Estate continues apace with all doors and interior stripped out and now starting on the engine.

Having trouble tapping out the pin that secures the the change rod to the gearbox. Car is on my lift but this is a 4Ft lift version not full standing height but does give me good access when sitting on the floor.

There are two pins in the connector sleeve. The rear one is vertical  and would be the easiest to drive out but it does not look if there is enough clearance above for  the pin to come  out. I have been trying to tap out the horizontal one nearest the gearbox. With the exhaust removed the bolthole in the bracket lines up nicely with the pin but i have limited swing with the hammer so is totally ineffective. I am using a proper pin punch with a 4mm diameter at the front.

Am i trying to remove  the wrong one?. Is there enough clearance for the rear one to go up without fouling the gear case ? What gear is the best to select whilst doing this. Any advice much appreciated.

Put the car into reverse and remove the front pin.

One or two good blows with a heavy hammer will be more effective than lots of knocks with a little one.

One thing I used to do (mainly because I didn't have a punch) was to use one of those watchmakers metal screwdriver sets you'd ind in the £1 shop. Select the one that's the same size as the roll pin and push it through. Then hit it with a big hammer and it should come out nicely.

Great Little tool!
We use a variety of punches and twisted Allen keys and a hammer. The longest it took us to remove a roll pin was 2 days, it was seized solid so we had to wait on penetrating oil taking effect. We've never been beaten yet

Tool looks great but at 39 GBP, plus shipping overseas, I think I'll keep looking at other options....

Found this homemade tool option that seems to get the job done on the other cars with similar linkages:

Uses a C-clamp, some 1/4" sockets and 1/4" Allen driver bits in appropriate sizes to fit the roll pin.

I bought one of these, and along with a big hammer, it came out pretty easily.

The trouble with "bashing" the pin out, is that whilst it is the official way of doing it, it can destroy that oil seal so might be wise to replace it once you have the selector disconnected as a precaution

I made this after lying on my back in the cold trying to remove the gear link pin with a hammer and punch.

Picked some bits out the scrap bin and half hour later had this. 1 minute later the pin was out.

Spot on GraemeC. It needs a big hammer. Got my club hammer out of the shed and it was out in seconds.

Thank you all for your replies

Just got to get the rear engine mount  to subframe bolts out and it will be ready to come out. When i started working on mini's  50 years ago i had several spanners bent or welded at the correct angle or shape to get at these awkward ones but alas they are long gone. But now we have angle grinders so if the worse comes tp the worse it will be a quick chop with the disc.

How simple is that !

I should say " I'm impressed " but this is the sort of thing I've come to expect from you !
