My 72 with the NLA across the the colum steeing lock / ignition key is no longer working, key barrel probaly broken inside. These are NLA and hard to find.

I was thinking of taking the the whole unit off and maybe mounting a central simple 3 way igntion barrel from mk1&2. (off-on-springstart)
However, how would I go about wiring ut up? The original has 4 wires: Brown, White/Red, White & White/green wheras a 3  way has only 3 termals. Pleas advise.

I know there is a MGB one part number is ADU 3341 that had the small diamerer as the mini colum, but can't find any on the interwebs.

Or anyone with an original working one with key that they are willing to sell ?

Thanks

If originality isn’t a factor I’d look at swapping the column out for the later Mk4 one.
That way the wiring will be much easier and you will retain the features of having a steering lock.

I think this could possibly be the MGB one.

As for wiring a 4 wire into a 3 wire it would just be the case of connecting the white and white/green to the same terminal

Thank for the wiring tip.

The above is just the electric bit. I need the lock/ barrel bit :-)

You'll probably struggle then unfortunately, second hand ones do pop up on ebay regularly but they do tend to be quite pricey

worth looking at ADO16 ones of that era? I know the cowling's the same, so I guess the ignition switch is as well

To be fair, it is usually the electrical switch that fails.

So a wanted ad on here my turn up a barrel that someone has previously swapped out due to a failed switch.

As mentioned many times above it's the switch that tends to disintegrate -making it impossible to turn the key.

Take off the shroud, remove the grub screw & take off the switch/cable assembly, if the key then turns you need a new switch.

Part number 37H6544 for Neiman-Tex, or 37H6962 if you have a Lowe & Fletcher steering lock (Mk3s were fitted with either lock).

Deff the barrel that is bad unfortunaly.

For your wiring question:

Brown: +12V supply to switch

Switch position 1 - White/green becomes live (Accessory feed out)

Switch position 2- White becomes live (Ignition feed out) and white/green remains live

Switch position 3 (sprung) - White/Red becomes live (Starter feed out), white remains live and (I think) White/green briefly drops to 0V

The dash mounted switched didn't have the Accessory position, you would need to wire the white and the white/green to the same terminal.
