Hi all,

A friend has his beloved mpi Mini at a classic car restorer, and they're busy putting it back together right now.

They don't know how the relay bracket indicated on the attached photo is attached to the bodyshell - they're asking is it self-tapper, rivet or bolt ?!

From my memory (i had an MPI 20 years ago but don't now) I think its the relays for the spotlights.

Thanks!

- Rob

It's a bolt on mine with a threaded captive nut on the inner wing.

Yep. One single bolt into a captive nut

Thanks - I've passed that on...

He replies...

Is the bracket at right angles to the surface it is bolted to?
The relays near the wiper motor are mounted vertically but if this bracket is at right angles they would be mounted horizontally. In order to be mounted vertically the bracket would be folded back to be parallel with the inner wing.
Does that make sense?

Do they definitely have the correct bracket because their second question doesn't make sense. I'm going from memory, but I recall the bracket has tabs for the relays which point upwards, and a folded section which simply bolts to the inner wing. The relays then sit parallel to the wing with the connections on the underside, it's very obvious when fitting which does question whether they're using the wrong bits! I think mine has tabs for 4 relays but can't be sure without looking.

I'd be concerned a classic mini restorer doesn't know this bracket...

It's not a classic mini restorer, just a classic car restorer. They've done really well except for details like this.

Thanks son much for everyone’s input. Having direct knowledge and access to the part is more than helpful.
I will go to the restorer on Monday armed with a wealth of wisdom and knowledge!
Strangely my bracket isn’t identical to the one in the photographs but the principle will remain the same.
Thanks so much and particularly to Rob Lightbody for consulting this hive mind of experience and savvy.
Thanks.

I will check it out tomorrow and share photos.
The car has had a front end replacement/refurb around 10 years ago so the bracket might not be original to the car. It certainly has enough tabs for 3 yellow relays but does not have the 4th black relay/fuse holder fitted. The bracket is folded to allow for vertical positioning of relays.
Thanks for caring.

The bracket was as previously shown in photos. It had been wrongly bent weakening the lug.
It will be strengthened and all will be well.
Thanks again.

Yes that looks correct, 4 relay positions as per the late model cars. As standard they were painted black.
