Hi, I’ve recently taken over a mini van which was off the road for 20+ years. After some teething problems the car is now running and driving well and I’m running it in. However, my speedo is temperamental. It always operates when the car is initially driven, but stops during the journey. If it’s parked up and then driven again it works for a bit and then stops again. I can see from other posts that changing the speedo cable is a pain, so before I try that does anyone have any suggestions? When it works the speedo is reading low (by between 5-10%). I’m assuming that’s a different issue altogether but am mentioning it just in case it could be related. Cheers for any pointers....

It does sound like the cable has failed or come disconnected.

changing it is not that hard.

Thanks Nick - I’ll bite the bullet and get the cable changed.

I'd be sure it's the Speedo Drive Pinion in the Gearbox slipping, somewhat common issue.

You can change it with the engine in situ. Either remove the Radiator and come in from the top, or I tend to come in from under. Jack the car up high n the LH side, then you can remove the Pot Joint without draining the oil. After that, access is good.

To check if it's the Cable or the Pinion, undo the cable off the back of the Speedo and then try and twist the inner core. If it feels rough or indeed spins, then it's likely the cable. If it feels firm, then it's likely the Pinion.
