I'm replacing the valve stem oil seals while the heads off,it is in a fairly clean state,is it necessary to do anything with the valve seats when only changing the valve stem oil seals?

No but while the valves are out its worth giving them a quick tickle. Make the most of the opportunity with it all apart.

Yeah,your all right me thinks,it's all on the bench now in bits...
The seats don't look to bad,what grade paste do we think folks...

You should try testing valves are liquid gas tight when fully closed from spring pressure. Pour some gas into the closed valve intake or exhaust port and wait 20 min or more to see if any fluid is getting past the seat. This tells you condition of the sealing seat and if you need a lapping or seat recut.

You should never use the coarse paste it will ruin the valve and seat.
Use the fine paste and thin it down with a drop of WD40.

Cheers,yeah,was only planning on fine paste....what's best to remove any paste,thinners,turps,wd40....

Brake cleaner or petrol, something that will not leave any residue.
