My ‘65 Elf had been fitted with a 1275 A+ engine  before I bought the car. I’m a bit concerned about the dipstick and it’s fitting. It is very loose in the hole in the cylinder block, the stick has a bit of a plastic seal around it but as I say it is a very loose fit.

is there supposed to be some form of tube, nipple or fitting missing from the block? If there is something missing the dipstick will be giving the wrong reading for the oil level.

The engine is, I believe a 1989 as fitted to a Metro and is a 12H DO9 111###

Looks the same as the one that was in our Metro 1275 lump, also quite loose. It didn't cause a problem but I replaced it with a new one anyway (that sealed with o-rings) as I wanted to make sure the air flow through the breather system was as it should be.

That is how they are and I feel none too good.

Mini Spares offer bling Dip Sticks. If you can look past that, they do have a nice pair of O Rings on them that not only hold the Dip Sick nice, they also seal quite well.

When racing Metros, we used to put a tension spring between the dizzy clamp and the loop of the dipstick to stop them flying out.......

Otherwise, looks completely standard to me.

Same issue on my 1275 engine. I took a dremel small cutting ball to the plastic fitting and milled a groove around the section that goes into block. Placed a small rubber o-ring in the groove and this now holds the dipstick securely into block, not bouncing around from pressure pulses.

Pre A+ had a tube that the dip stick fitted into, the A+ just goes straight in the block and is a lose fit to say the least... If I recall A and A+ dispsticks are differnt lengths becuse of the tube fitted to the Pre A+

As above "we" put a spring on it to keep the dippy in on the racers

Nope. They are the same length.

very very early 850s were different as are the auto and the MPi all the rest are exactly the same distance from the metal shoulder to the level marks. The length from the mark to the actual end can be different.
