All

Just thought I'd say that I've had good results using this relatively cheap rust remover from Screwfix.  It's a strong acid solution (Phosphoric Acid) that you dilute with 50/50 with water - have found it very effective on rusty bolts and linkages (currently rebuilding engine and carburettors).

Have only tried on steel and iron so far. Dilute versions also work, they just take longer.

Obviously be careful - wear gloves, goggles, ventilated areas, rinse well etc.

Currently £6.99 per litre which compares well compared to some of the brands targetting automotive.

Should be good for cleaning out the internal waterways.

It's good stuff and that's not a bad price either.

I've used a few bottles over the last couple of years. Very good.

I've tried it too and it works well. But I've found citric acid powder dissolved in hot water works even better and it's even cheaper.

Surely bilt hamber DEOX would work out cheaper, you can make litres out of one bottle.

That’s my experience too. 10% citric acid solution, drop a block into it for 2 days, bingo.

I use a home made citric acid solution bath too.  Very effective and just leave things in as long as needed to do the job - I may occasionally pull them out, scrub them off then drop them back in.

One note though: these acid based de-rusting 'solutions' do leave the metal very 'bare' and as such can be very susceptible to flash rusting again quickly.  I'd recommend they are rinsed off in hot water, dried thoroughly and coated with something (paint, grease, oil, WD40) to preserve the rust free finish you've just achieved.

A ford block I had buried in the garden for years.

Left in a bin of citric acid mix for 2 days.

The other guys have answered first but I put a cup full into a bucket of hot water and dumped all my Minor parts that would fit in to it. Took them out the next day to give them a scrub and put them back in for another 24 hours.

Rear spring/damper mounts after a wire brush but before they went in the bucket. They were very crusty

I've been lead to believe Deox-C is basically Citric acid.

Bilt hamber also have a rincing product that mixes with water that prevents rusting.
