hi there..i´ll continue from the "introduce yourself" thread that this was presented on (and was very useful thanks to you experts)

yesterday the mini came back from the mechanic where we tested the engine and cleaned out the carbs etc..it now starts from the new battery and runs from petrol in the rear end. its a 1974 authi in theory..but with a metro engine put in by previous owners..it also has discs up front and was rigged up with spot lights and bolt on rally goodies judging by the holes in the body. so staright into rubbing down the old filler to see the damaga..very little rot!..2 holes..a few bends and twists but nothing scary..the floor has has new panels rivetted in by some old duffer..and will need welding properly

it has the hole through to the boot space which i believe is a authi thing?.and the wood dash

i´m dead happy its a lovely looking car..its on revos and michelin tyres that i sourced in blighty

The hole through to the boot space also featured on UK built Minis and was used in conjunction with the centre speedo hole in the front bulkhead to rotate the bare bodyshell at the factory in a Rotadip bath process to help prevent corrosion. Not very successful as we now know Minis still rusted and the process was later abandoned and the holes were blanked off in later Minis from around 1990.

wow i didnt know that..it really was a forward thinking design. the idea for it is generally trad look it´ll be a plaster grey colour with black roof and black door circle..stage 2 arches and the italian job light rig..and i really fancy tartan in the interior

i´ve got a question..whats this opening for...access to the motor parts seems unlikely..i´m wondering if it was to give more ventilation to the inner wheel arch hence radiator for hot climates?..lots of spanish claim overheating problems in spain for minis..they change to a 4 winged fan apparantly

Its on the wrong side of the rad for cooling.

 

On early Mk1s it was blanked off, on some later models there was a plastic scoop here that took air up to the vent on the LH side of the dash.

Hmm weird.. There are definitely no interior connection on mine.. Maybe because it's left hand drive?
In the meantime I've been straightening out the front and welding all the holes

However some more basic models didn't have fresh air vents, so the space behind the grille was probably either blanked over or just left as a hole.

so colour is on..roof is black..going round the bend with the roundel colour..black or white..and quite possibly going to go with the kamikaze fighter look and do it red..what do you think?

getting there..cafe racer style with zero fighter plane reference..the japanese symbols mean "beloved english car"
